What is Reiki?

Usui Reiki was first discovered in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui and is defined in the Oxford English dictionary as “A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being”.

During the last century, Reiki has evolved and there are different variations to the original Usui Reiki. I work with Usui/Holy Fire® III Reiki which is both powerful and gentle and comes from a higher level of consciousness than traditional Usui Reiki. It was introduced by William Lee Rand who is the originator of the Usui/Tibetan system of Reiki. He developed the Karuna Reiki® system of healing in 1995 with assistance from his students and then in 2014 he introduced Holy Fire® Reiki. This was subsequently upgraded to Holy Fire® II in 2015 and then Holy Fire® III in 2018. In 2020 he introduced the ability to offer Reiki at a distance to anyone anywhere in the world.

'Rei' means Universal and 'Ki' means Life Energy and Reiki operates on the principle of channelling universal life force energy to promote balance and healing within the mind, body and spirit.

About Julie - Usui/Holy Fire® III Reiki Ryoho Reiki Master Practitioner

I have been interested in alternative healing modalities for many years, originally starting with a regular yoga practice. I began to use essential oils for their relaxing benefits at a time in my life when I needed help with the usual daily stresses of motherhood, working and running a home. I have always wanted to explore natural ways of supporting my mental and emotional health.

As life moved on I began to face some of the traumas I had experienced over a number of years and sought out the help of an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. The three years I spent unpicking all my 'stuff' with her brought about a huge change in my self-confidence and gave me the tools to feel confident in trying new things.

I discovered sound healing and absolutely loved the weekly soundbaths. I learnt to be vulnerable and to feel the magic of sharing circles and through this I realised that my life experiences were far from unique. There was a lot of comfort in that and in the growth that resulted from that.

They say your vibe attracts your tribe and through the connection I made with the facilitator of the sound healing sessions I attended a couple of wellbeing retreats where I met yet more like-minded women.

I have experienced forest bathing, meditation, reflexology, breathwork, myofascial release, Chinese meridian work, craniosacral therapy and Reiki!

All the wonderful women who have been such an integral part of my own healing journey inspired me to explore becoming a facilitator myself in some form of healing, and there was no question that Reiki called to me on a deep level.

My Reiki training began in January 2025 when I completed the Usui/Holy Fire® I Reiki training. I followed with Usui/Holy Fire® II Reiki in April 2025. Then in June 2026 I spent three incredible days in Glastonbury, the Heart Chakra of the World, with William Lee Rand, Senior Reiki Master Teacher and President of the International Centre for Reiki Training and completed Usui/Holy Fire® III Reiki Ryoho Reiki Master level. To learn from such an inspirational man was an honour and a privilege.

I am committed to the continued deepening of my knowledge and experience of Reiki and will be doing a Womb Reiki course, accredited by the International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine (IPHM), in July 2026. Then, in October 2026 I will be taking the ICRT Animal Reiki I & II course. After that

My women-only healing space is in Horsham, West Sussex and I also offer remote distance healing if you are unable to travel to me.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

The Reiki will last approximately 45 minutes to one hour but I allow plenty of time before and after the session so you can relax before I start and ask me as many questions as you need. Please allow 90 minutes for your first session so we can go through your new client form. I will email this to you ahead of the session, along with directions and parking information, but if you prefer to complete it when you arrive I will have a form ready for you. There is plenty of time after the session to discuss anything you feel you want to share, but there is no expectation for you to share anything if you don't want to. The important thing is that you don't feel rushed out of the door after your session finishes.

You will lay on a treatment bed for the session and all you have to remove are your shoes. I have a wedge cushion to provide support under your legs to alleviate any strain to your lower back and a pillow for your head.  There are blankets for your warmth and comfort - if it is warm I will recommend a thin blanket over just your legs as you can get cold during a Reiki session. However, if you prefer no cover then that is also fine. There is a heated underblanket which is so lovely in the cooler weather, and a Dyson fan keeps us cool in the warmer months. As you can see, it is important that you feel comfortable, whatever the weather!!

During the session I will place my hands either just above or on your body with a light touch and I will place my hands beneath your head for a short while. However if you prefer that I don't touch you then that is not a problem and the Reiki energy will still flow to where it is needed. You may experience sensations of heat, cold, tingling in your hands and/or feet, twitches or jerks in your limbs and you may also see colours or even experience a dream-like state. Sometimes emotions can arise and this is perfectly normal and I recommend you try to allow the tears to flow if they need to.

I use a small air purifier with high-quality pure essential oils before and during a session, but if you are sensitive to fragrance let me know in advance and I will avoid using it. Or if you have a favourite essential oil let me know and I can use that if I have it. Before and after a session I also use sage or Palo Santo to cleanse the energy in the space.

I recommend that you drink plenty of water for the 24-48 hours after a session. Reiki energy will clear out any stuck energy and as a result toxins in your system will be flushed out in the same way as after a massage. If you can avoid alcohol and processed food for a few days afterwards, that is also really beneficial. You may experience headaches, body aches or tiredness but this is part of the healing process and nothing to worry about. If you can avoid taking painkillers and allow these after effects to work their way through, it will be of more benefit to you.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I am always open to suggestions for improving your comfort and wellbeing.

Book Your Healing Session

Having experienced Reiki with different practitioners before, this was however my first time having Holy Fire Reiki done. I went into the session with expectations that I hoped I would get from it and the session truly exceeded them! Such a powerful experience, Julie really is naturally gifted with this amazing talent. She has such a calming and welcoming disposition, that whether you’re completely new to Reiki or new to Holy Fire like myself then I highly recommend Restorative Reiki with Julie!
